All of those things sound like they should be simple to pull off, and yet all kinds of modern takes on the genre fail (or at least fall a little short) on delivering the kind of fun that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy delivers with ease.

There aren’t many 3D platformers out there today that play like this, with smooth controls, an easy-to-operate camera, and worlds that are fun to explore. If you only know Spyro from his recent incarnation as the mascot for a toy-collecting game, all three titles here will be eye-openers for you. But I’ll still go ahead and say it again, since it bears repeating for any newcomers to the series. I know I’m probably preaching to the choir, since I may be the last person in the world to learn that the three Spyro games here - Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon - are really, really good. Turns out, I should stop being so cynical, because Spyro Reignited Trilogy is utterly delightful. As someone who never played any of the Spyro games the first time around (I was strictly a Mario Kart + sports gamer back then), I was fully prepared to find myself underwhelmed.

The third game features a few of the same characters from Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and starts off with Spyro celebrating the year of the dragon.ĭuring the celebration, baby dragon eggs are stolen following an invasion by an evil sorceress. This installment had some very exciting new changes and added a few treats, like Sparx the dragonfly becoming a playable character on certain levels. The third installment of the Spyro trilogy came in the year 2000 and is titled Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Sparx the dragonfly is still around and assists Spyro in gathering gems. This game features a lot of different characters compared to the first game, along with a new antagonist. A villain who has taken over the five dragon homeworlds.įollowing the release and response to the first Spyro game, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! Was released in 1999. Players had to help Spyro and Sparx defeat the game’s antagonist, Gnasty Gnore. The game was released on the PlayStation and followed our little purple hero and his trusted sidekick, a dragonfly called Sparx on a journey through the Dragon Kingdom. Spyro first captured so many adventurous hearts back in 1998 when developers over at Insomniac Games released the original game titled: Spyro the Dragon. Whether you played the games or not, just about everyone can recall the little purpled dragon by the name of Spyro. The trilogy has already been made available by Toys For Bob on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. The epic remastering of three nostalgic classics is coming to the Nintendo Switch.
