Mixing standard “green” formula coolant with a long-life OAT or HOAT coolant may reduce the service life of the mixture to two to three years, or 30,000 to 50,000 miles. With transaxles, this can be accomplished with multiple fluid drains and refills, or with the "correct" variants of transaxle flushes (the one where they drop the pan and connect the machine). Just make sure you get as much of the older stuff out when you make a change like that. Transaxle fluid - as long it meets the specification, should be no reason not to use an alternative.

Not once have I've had any cooling system related problem with any Toyota that used the OEM Toyota red coolant (haven't tried the "pink" stuff yet, maybe if it comes full strength instead of pre-diluted). I'm with friendly_jacek and TRCar54 - can't beat the Toyota OEM coolant. I know Karate, Kung Fu, and 47 other dangerous words (9,744 posts) My suggestion to Long Commute was to stay with Toyota recommended fluids.especially the coolant. If you reread my post you'll see that I am saying that I will use any Dexron 3 in my 95 but won't change from the Toyota red coolant. I know that the 95 uses Dexron and the newer cars use specific fluids. Now, if your car is under warranty, you may not want to stray from recommended fluids. Mobil 1 ATF (multivehicle formula), Redline D4 and some Amsoil ATFs are compatible with T-IV and offer much better, synthetic base oil. Toyota's T-IV is supposedly a long life fluid, but known to deteriorate fast (in 30-60000 miles), as expected from a mineral fluid. Meticulous removing of trace residues of the original coolant would be required. If you want to switch to other coolant, you are risking lesser protection or incompatibility issues. The toyota coolant is superb (but pricey). For the small difference I would stick with the Toyota stuff. I use regular Dexron 3 ATF but won't stray from the Toyota red. Suitable for both gasoline and diesel engines, its original long-life chemistry is specially formulated with the highest quality virgin ethylene glycol and. My old 95 is still running strong with 270K. Fish and the regulars might be a little more aware what brands are good replacements for toyota synthetic fluid, but i think almost any major brand would work well. Its all goodįor transmission fluid I would use any good full synthetic like amsoil or mobil 1.

My '07 owners manual says to use the "Toyota super long life coolant" and "Toyota genuine ATF type T-IV fluid" is there an equal alternative that I can buy or should I stick with the Toyota brand? Thanks, Dave
